While most people are running from the eye of the storm, insurance adjusters are heading in the opposite direction.
“Insurance adjusters are the people who swoop in with a paycheck during the worst of times,” says Diana Fink, who has been working in the insurance adjusting industry for 35 years.
Under normal conditions, insurance adjusters try to respond to insurance claims within 24 to 72 hours. The adjuster evaluates damage to insured property and then submits a damage estimate to the insurance company.
Some homeowners are pleased to the see adjusters, others aren’t as thrilled.
“Sometimes people want to collect on outrageous claims,” says Fink, who is always brokenhearted when it comes to breaking bad news to insured homeowners.
“I heard a story through the grapevine about a person who enjoyed a few too many beers before a storm forced him to evacuate from his house. He asked his adjuster to cover the costs of his D.U.I.,” exclaims a surprised Fink.
There are three kinds of insurance adjusters. Two types of adjusters work directly for the insurance company, the other type of adjuster is hired directly by the homeowner.
“Public adjusters are paid by the homeowner and independent or company adjusters are hired and paid for by the insurance company,” says Fink, who founded Central Insurance School to train all types of insurance adjusters.
All three types of insurance adjusters are sure to have something in common. They must be licensed in the state where they are practicing and come wind or high water, they must be willing to rescue homeowners from disaster.
